SWD = Standing War Department? The numbers given show the position of British Army units only in terms of the Army Order of Precedence.
Index No = The order in which the British/Colonial Units appear in the indexes. See below for Australia, , Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand, Newfoundland, South Africa and the Indian Army.
Index Numbers 16-24 are not listed (there is also no 13!) and it is likely that they represent the unnumbered Index volumes (no number is visible on the volumes) covering larger Commonwealth forces: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Newfoundland, South Africa. The Indian volumes are also included in this list, although only the volume for European soldiers in the Indian Army was produced by at the end of the 1920s. The volume covering native Indian soldiers was not produced until after WW2 using the same format -including date of death- as the WW2 Index volumes (the information for the Indian volume is likely to have been taken from relevant published Cemetery & Memorial Registers).
